The Bruce Museum

The Bruce Museum is a community based, world-class institution highlighting art, science and natural history in more than a dozen changing exhibitions annually. The permanent galleries feature the natural sciences that encompass regional to global perspectives. In September 2019, the Museum launched the public phase of the Campaign for the New Bruce. The $60 million renovation and construction project – the first since a $4.3 million expansion in 1992 – is already under way, with the renovation of the changing gallery spaces in Fall 2019, to be followed in early 2020 with a complete renovation and reinvention of the permanent science galleries. Groundbreaking for the art wing addition is anticipated to take place Summer 2020.
 
The expansion of the Museum from 30,000 to 70,000 square feet will add state-of-the-art exhibition, education, and community spaces, significantly increasing room for permanent and changing exhibitions of art and science, and connecting the Museum to its picturesque setting in Bruce Park in a dramatic new way. Headquarters of The Historical Society of the Town of Greenwich, this harbor-side pre-Revolutionary War site became the center of the first art colony in Connecticut, a cradle of American Impressionism. Changing exhibitions on history and art, and docent-led historic house tours are offered daily, except Mondays, from 12-4 p.m. A research archive houses a rare collection of photographs and documents relating to Greenwich history and is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays or by appointment. The barn has been transformed into an education center and is available for rental for meetings and parties. Founded in 1931, the Historical Society was recently accredited by the American Association of Museums and attracts regional, national and international visitors.

For over 25 years the Greenwich Arts Council, a nonprofit organization with over 1,000 members, has fostered the visual, performing and literary arts in the Town of Greenwich. Its programs include the annual POPS CONCERT in June and its signature 'Art to the Avenue,' held every year in May. The newly renovated Bendheim Gallery offers rotating exhibits, including work from local artists. Its dance and art studio, and performing and reception space, are available for rent, for a modest fee.

Stocked with 300,000 books, 14,000 audio and video cassettes, and an extensive periodical section, the Greenwich Library has been cited as the busiest town library in Connecticut. Its newly renovated facilities are extensive, including a 368-seat auditorium and a large exhibition gallery. There are also branch libraries in Byram and Cos Cob, plus the Perrot, an independent affiliated library in Old Greenwich.
